Common Ant Types
Ants are found the world over, from the hottest deserts to the lush green rainforests. We can find them in our landscapes, in our homes, and even in our workplaces. Ants live in colonies, and a single colony may have over a million ants. There are several different kinds of ants. Some of the better-known varieties are the army ants, driver ants, honeypot ants, weaver ants, leaf cutter ants, fire ants, silver ants, and bulldog ants. Colonies of ants are made of three classes of ants, namely the workers, the soldiers, and the lone queen.
Ants are of different types & are one of the most common creatures in the world. In spite of their tiny They are small but terrible; they could pose a threat to humans as well as animals.
The behavior of ants may vary depending on their class. The size of ants range from two to 25 millimeters & their color may vary from red to brown or black.
Army ants & driver ants are highly evolved ants. Army ants can be found in South America & driver ants are seen in Africa. Unlike other species, these don’t have permanent nests. These colonies reproduce via two methods – nuptial flights or fission.
Ants that create their nests in trees by putting leaves together are known as weaver ants. These creatures first pull the leaves together with a bridge of workers & then they sew the leaves by pressing silk producing larvae on the leaves.
Honeypot ants generally have enlarged bellies. These ants are typically found in hot, dry places such as deserts in Australia, Africa and North America. Some places considered them as a great delicacy.
Leaf cutter ants live only within their colony & feed only on fungus. These ants come in different sized castes to carry out several functions that are to be done in the colony.
Ants that have a sac of poison are known as the fire ant. Their “poison” is known as piperidine alkaloids.
Lastly, one of the biggest and most primitive varieties of ants are the Australian bulldog ants. They have only 1 chromosome.
