So is this a joke? Is there really a connection between running faster and having “clean nose”? I know it does sound like a joke but actually there is a very direct connection between Saline Nasal Spray and being able to run faster.

When you breath through your nose while you run you kind of set the equivalent of a governor on your system. You can only run so fast or push yourself so hard before you have to open up your mouth and start breathing harder. When you open up your mouth to start breathing harder you will tend to faster—-going faster when you are getting tired can increase your injury rate. Here’s another neat thing- when you run breathing through your nose your heart rate is slower! So you will slow down getting that sense of fatigue if you keep your heart rate slower.
So what does this have to do with Saline Nasal Solution that can be used as a Nasal Spray? Simple. Lots of people have subtle or not so subtle congestion issues in their nose. That makes it artificially harder to breath through their nose, so they start gasping through their mouth, run faster than they ought to and increase the risk for an injury! If they can use a saline nasal spray before and during the run they can keep their nose more clear and improve the odds that they can continue more of the run breathing completely through the nose!
So there you have it– there’s the connection between saline nasal solution and running faster (running without injury). The saline nasal solution and spray makes it easier for you to breath through your nose. If you breath through your nose you are much more likely to run at the pace that your fitness level is ready to do. So clearly if you can use a simple strategy to keep your nose fully open while your run, you can really have less injury because your’re running at your best pace.

The No-Tech Lo-Tech Nasal Saline Spray
If you go into a typical store in search of a treatment for your nasal symptoms, you will find a dizzying array of options to treat your nose. Many of these are strategies to get saline into your nose. The most common of these is a nasal saline spray.
Clearly you need an effective nasal saline solution to be able to use it as a nasal spray. It’s not complicated. The most common products simply put salt and water together although the concentrations may vary. Oh, but lest I forget, they tend to have preservatives in them too. Yes, sad to say, preservatives are there to keep the germs out. Most of the nasal sprays on the market have preservatives so it’s a good chance that yours does too.
The average person might shrug their shoulders. “Big deal” they might say. I would like you to consider for a moment the concept that something that is strong enough to kill germs is being sprayed up your nose. Here’s the straight scoop: preservatives irritate the cells in the lining of the nose. Surprised?

These strategies are used because of the belief that it does not help to sniff a nasal saline solution from the hand into the nose. Somehow the belief that this strategy doesn’t “work” is floating around out there in the land of the nasal treatment.
Actually, sniffing a nasal saline solution from the hand is a very good way to get the equivalent of a saline nasal spray up the nose. I think it’s the best way. In over 30 years of medical practice I see this as a very effective strategy— when it’s done right and with the right kind of home made nasal saline solution. Nutrition and Nasal Health
I am writing this article to help you understand some of the different aspects of having a healthy nose. In many cases I suggest using a good nasal saline spray or solution as a key to having a healthy nose. At the same time as you are working on having a healthy nose you will also be creating the environment to have a healthy sinus. So the cells in the nose are very much affected by the nutrition in the body. While this is obvious if you think about it, the trouble is that most of us don’t think about it. Very often people with chronic nasal problems or chronic sinus problems just don’t pay attention to how they are eating. They are often eating “garbage”. If you eat garbage you are much more likely to have chronic nasal and sinus problems.
There are many many nutrients that are important for health. These nutrients can be supplemented to a diet. Now you can either supplement a good diet or supplement a bad diet. Which strategy do you think is more effective? It is a sad fact that many people who do supplement are in fact eating a bad diet most of the time. This guarantees that the nasal cells will not be healthy. Even if you do use a good nasal saline solution you will not have a good outcome in the long run.
There are over 50 key nutrients that are useful and helpful to supplement and all of them directly or indirectly play a roll in the immune function of the body. If any one of them are low, there is a bad effect on the body’s immune function. We are beginning to understand this more and so we have a lot of information on a few nutrients and a lot of research available to support the supplementation of a few nutrients. But it is likely that all of the nutrients that are crucial to health can be useful to the body when supplemented.
So in summary, there are a lot of things that affect the health of the nose that are actually issues for the whole body. I believe that nothing is as important as nutrition. Saline Nasal Spray- Better to Sniff?
Today I was asked the question “why do you need to sniff the saline solution into your nose instead of just spraying it up into your nose?” Fair question so I thought I would spend a little bit of time explaining the answer.
First of all it’s definitely not bad to use a spray bottle to squirt saline solution up into the nose. In fact that’s a great way to moisturize the lining of the nose especially during the winter time. In many cases people are living in a place where the humidity is about 3% (pretty dry, kind of like a desert) so this is a good way to humidify the lining of the nose.
The main negative for just using a spray solution from a bottle is that you will not usually spray up enough solution to mobilize or move secretions that might be in the way of the sinus passages. When they are in the way of the sinus openings it has the effect of plugging the sinuses. The way most people use a saline nasal spray, the effect is to maybe make the nose run a little but no real effect on the sinuses.
When you “sniff” the saline solution into your nose you create a completely different dynamic. The volume of solution is 10-20 times what might be moved from just spraying the nasal solution, and this volume has a very powerful effect on actually “grabbing” secretions and moving them. If those secretions are in the way of the sinus opening then you have “in effect” helped to keep the sinus open and decrease the chances of it getting infected.
There is a way to get a similar, although I still think not quite as good, result by using the nasal saline spray bottle. Essentially you have to get a lot more solution up the nose by spraying 15-20 times in each nostril. You need to keep sniffing the solution up the nose while you continue to spray it into the nose. This increased volume of solution does get hold of more secretions and helps to get a similar result as if you were sniffing the solution from your hand. The key is continuing to sniff the solution up as you continue to spray the solution up.
To summarize, if you want to move nasal secretions, you need a lot of volume of saline solution. While you can accomplish this goal by spraying up a lot of solution, you have a better outcome by inhaling the solution from the palm of your hand.
