How to get rid of acne scars
Acne is embarrassing enough, but acne scars are even worse. These long-lasting scars can be on your face, back, shoulders, and even other parts of your body. These scars appear ugly. Topical creams, gels, pills and lotions don’t help. We all want flawless skin and acne scars are too noticeable and cannot always be hidden with clothing.
These scars are the result of popping pimples or squeezing the “yuk” out of the pimple. Popping and squeezing leaves a permanent mark. The deeper you have peeled the skin, the darker the mark. Once the scar appears it is very hard to get rid of.
Your best bet for dealing with acne scars is paying a visit to your dermatologist.
The process of dermabrasion (not micro-dermabrasion) removes the layers of skin on affected areas. The dermatologist will first numb your face and begin a “sanding” process of removing layers of skin. This will require a couple weeks of recovery time. Your skin will scab; and once the scabs fall off, fresh skin will emerge with that fresh youthful glow. This process is used for light complected individuals and also for very dark complected individuals. Those with the “in-between” skin color should look for a different procedure.
Laser resurfacing is a good process to clear away pimples and get rid of acne scars. A laser is used to eradicate acne scarring, working in a similar fashion as dermabrasion. The damaged top layers of skin are removed and there is still a recovery time of a couple weeks. A topical ointment may be prescribed by your doctor to help with the recovery process. You may need to have your face bandaged as well.
There are chemical peels that are used for very light acne scarring. Different types of acids are applied to the top layer of skin and left on for 15 minutes before removing. This removes the top layers of the epidermis. Expect redness and swelling afterwards. Depending on the amount of acid used for the procedure, recovery time can be from one day to a couple weeks.
There is a technique called the “punch” technique that is used for those that have deep pitted acne scars. A piece of scarred skin is “punched” then removed, a skin graft is taken (usually from behind the ear), and is then placed where the scarred skin was removed. This procedure is usually combined with laser resurfacing or dermabrasion. If the area affected is small enough a skin graft may not be needed. After the punching technique is completed the recovery time is several weeks or longer.
You can also consider augmentation in which your dermatologist injects a filler (usually collagen) under the skin to help smooth the acne scarred surface. Your dermatologist may also take fat from other places of your body and inject that in place of using collagen. Recovery time is about a day at the most – it would like receiving any other type of shot. Augmentation is just a temporary fix and will have to be done again in about 6 months.
If you have any acne scars – don’t panic. There are a few things you can do:
Dip a cotton ball in fresh lemon juice and pat your face with the cotton ball – let it dry naturally. If you find the lemon juice irritating, try diluting with some cool water or rose water. After 15 to 20 minutes wash your face. Do this four times a week and you will see a change in your skin structure.
You can make a past using some sandlewood powder and rose water; add two to four drops of lime juice and apply this paste to your face. Allow to dry naturally, then rinse thoroughly. Do this regularly and you will see good results.
Each day you should apply cucumber juice to your face using cotton balls. This will “cool” the skin and also tightens the pores.
Make a paste from some fresh apple combined with honey (just a few drops of honey are needed) and apply as a mask. Leave on about 15 to 20 minutes and wash off. This will also tighten the pores and makes your complexion lighter.
For best results – don’t pick at, pop, or squeeze pimples.
