How to get rid of a black eye

A black eye is caused by a blow to the eye and cheek bone area, resulting in small hemorrhaging that is initially black, and as it heals will change to green and then yellow.  You can deal with the internal bleeding as long as the skin is not torn.  If there is a laceration, then you need medical attention.  You may need a couple stitches.   Also – if your vision is blurred, immediately seek medical attention.

Immediately after the blow or injury to the eye/cheekbone area, apply a cold compress to the eye area.  An ice pack or ice cubes wrapped in a towel will help to heal the eye, reduce the swelling that comes with it, and will also decrease the “black” formations around the eye by stopping the internal bleeding.  If none are available, grab a cold can of soda (or beer) and use that on your eye.  (Don’t drink the beer.)  Do not rub the ice over the area – the ice will generate heat.  And don’t place the cold can on the eye – place it on the cheekbone.  Never apply any pressure to the area.  Continue to use ice on your eye for 24 to 48 hours – ten minutes on – fifteen minutes off.  If your eye is closed – apply the ice every 10 minutes – ten minutes on and ten minutes off.

If this happens while at home – grab a bag of frozen vegetables and apply to the eye.  Many swear the a steak is best to use.  I’d rather enjoy eating the steak.  Whatever you choose to use, be sure it doesn’t have any sharp corners that will make matters worse for you.

By minimizing the swelling immediately, the blood vessels can begin to heal more quickly.

The next day or so (after the 24 to 48 hours of cold compresses) place a warm compress on the eye to reduce the soreness and begin the circulation of blood.  This will help with the “black” as well.

You will need to sleep with your head slightly elevated so that the blood flows from your head into the lower part of your body.  This will help to reduce the swelling around the eyes and the eyelids.

Make-up will not cover it – no matter how much you apply or how much concealer you use.  Besides, the chemicals in make-up may cause a reaction from this.

You will most likely feel pain with this.  Ask your doctor before taking anything.  Avoid taking aspirin when you have a black eye.  Aspirin will make it hard for your blood to clot, and with a black eye you want this to happen.

Take vitamin C tablets.  This will help with the blood under the skin.  Drink juices, eat pineapple and papaya since they are packed with vitamin C and they also contain enzymes that will help to break down the molecular structure of the collected blood, speeding up the process of absorbing the blood back into the system.  If you don’t like papaya – take papaya pills/capsules.

Don’t blow your nose with a black eye – it will cause your eye to blow up even more.  It can cause an infection if there is a chance that you have a fracture in the bone of the eye socket,   blowing your nose would allow air into your sinus adjacent and right into your eye socket leading to infections.

Be sure to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun.  the skin is delicate and can burn very easy.  Plus sunglasses are a good way to hide your black eye.
