Where would we be without coffee? No seriously, is there any other drink that could give us that great caffeine boost and taste so good? Starting the day without a cup or two is unthinkable.

The thing is, the boost runs out and your find yourself needing another one, and then another one. If I have to work late and know that I must finish before I can even think of going home, those caffeine drinks are a necessity to make sure I get through it.

I find the evening the hardest part of the day to get through without my caffeine. Saying no as the end of a meal is particularly difficult.

Those that also sweeten their drinks are more than likely to have a ‘crash’ than others, due to lack of caffeine and sugar. It is those who crash that tend to get to sleep quicker.

Your best bet is to test yourself and how your body reacts. Take your last cup later each day and gauge the reaction and whether you can sleep or not.

Don’t get impatient and only have the last drink a little later each day. If you skip a couple of stages you may well end up in being in a cycle of sleepless nights and gallons of coffee to keep you going while you’re awake.

Through His Tears He Passed The Stone

I was a quick pregnancy. I didn’t even know I was expecting. Now I am the proud father of a 2 millimeter shard of kidney stone. One minute I didn’t have a care in the world and the next thing I know, BAM! It hit me. I have never felt pain like that before, it was like I was incorrectly lifting a tree out of the ground and while I was busy doing that, someone decided to sneak up and kick me in the groin, in 5 minute intervals.

My wife was able to help me get in the van; we were off to the Emergency Room. We have driven to Baltimore from Florida many times and those trips seem like joy rides compared to the 20-minute journey to the hospital.

We finally made it and I was whisked through triage and received my stylish standard issue open back dress and an I.V. of their best fluid. The most pain-relieving thing I could do was pace. I looked like a semi-clean cut Ozzy Osborne shuffling around begging for drugs with my butt hanging out of my dress. I felt kind of bad for my wife because she wanted to help but there was really nothing she could do.

Bad pain like that really zaps your energy, I can totally understand the mean things that come out of the mouths of women in labor. I wanted to say to my wife, “Honey, there really isn’t anything you can do, but thanks for asking.” Oddly enough it came out “You did this to me!! You made me eat and drink this diet, and I want flippin’ drugs now!”

So I finally I got the drugs, or as they call them, “the good stuff”. Shortly after the relief kicked in I decided that Dilaudid would be a good name for a girl if we ever had one. I got a Cat Scan, a verification that it was indeed kidney stones and they sent me home to drink gallons of water and strain my urine. I had never had to do anything like that before but it reminded me of when I was a kid and we went to North Carolina on vacation and went mining for gemstones. Only this time it was without the dirt.

Half way through the next day it happened, it passed. Later that day I got a call from a friend who said he mentioned my ordeal to his mother and she said “Tell Greg to go up to his wife and thank her for having their baby.” Not that I have not done that but it occurred to me, no one offered ME an Epidural.
