While there are a large number of reasons for back pain, this article will discuss a few that are not often addressed. When back pain victims think of what causes back pain, they often believe that all of a sudden, they make a quick and sudden movement or pick up a heavy object and their back goes out. While this may happen in some circumstances, it is far more likely that repetitive conditions leading up to a sudden traumatic injury have much more to do with the pain than the proximate cause itself.
First of all, individuals who have static postures for elongated periods of time will produce compression forces on their spine and discs. These types of postures can greatly increase the forces on the lower back and the longer they need to be held, the more likely it is that chronic discomfort or injury will be the result. This is especially true if workers are forced to perform tasks in a posture with a flexed trunk type bending over posture. There is a greater risk and higher incidence of developing back pain over time.
Another cause of low back pain is simply sitting down while working for long periods of time. Long-term sitting postures at the workplace have a tendency to lead to chronic back discomfort. People who sit down hunched over a computer for 8-10 hours every day are asking their lower backs to perform functions for which it was not designed. Just getting up and extending the back with a stretch periodically throughout the day can help prevent long-term pain.
A very little-discussed cause of back pain is back pain due to vibration. This is especially true if it is occurring when in a seated position. These vibration forces are unpredictable and challenge the body’s ability to stabilize the spine. Sitting in a car or on the bus or train for several hours a day while commuting to work can cause stress on the spine and connective tissues. Over time, sitting while vibration is going on can lead to chronic back pain, even though the cause and effect may never be linked.
At New Century Spine Centers in San Diego, these causes of back pain are regularly treated by the chiropractors and spinal decompression doctors. Everyone should consider these causes of back pain. Avoiding back pain is important. Knowing what causes back pain is the first step to preventing back pain.
Chiropractic Doctor In Mission Valley Recap Studies Showing Anti-Depressants Are No Better Than Placebo
As a chiropractic physician in the city of San Diego, I see many patients suffering from back pain to stress. Researching some of the latest studies help me help my patients in many ways. Since depression is a common factor for pain, I find this article fitting.
Napoleon Hill, author of the self-help bible “Think and Grow Rich”, is quoted as saying: “What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” He also said we become our dominant thoughts. Research is showing he may be 100% accurate with those statements… especially the latter. Here is why: Starting in 1998, studies began to raise questions about the “scientific proof” behind the widespread use of Anti-depressants versus placebos.
University of Connecticut researchers, Irving Kirsch and Guy Sapirstein, found Anti-depressants seemed to get results, but so did placebos. In 38 studies conducted with over 3,000 depressed patients, placebos improved symptoms 75 percent as much as legitimate medications.
During an interview with Newsweek in 2010, Kirsch remarked “What’s going on?” The medical community was skeptical of his findings, asked him to redo a more comprehensive study with the results of all clinical trials conducted by antidepressant manufacturers, including those unpublished – 47 studies in total.
Over half of the studies showed no significant difference in effects from the Anti-depressants versus sugar pills. With this more thorough analysis, which now included strategically unpublished studies from pharmaceutical companies, placebos were shown to improve symptoms 82 percent as much as the medicated pills.
According to the Citizens Commission on Human Rights International: “However, if experts and antidepressant manufacturers are aware of this, the general public certainly isn’t … Millions of people every year feel better, simply because they believe they are feeling better.”

The spinal cord is a simple arrangement of bones and cushioning discs between them. However, the nerves these bones are protecting can be affected when there is a problem with those bones or discs. One of these problems is herniated discs.
Back injuries are the common cause of discs becoming herniated. Aging can also help discs to get weak enough for them to move out of alignment more easily from constant strain on the back. When these discs affect the nerves, the pain can be varied.
Aging causes a loss of elasticity in the spinal disc tissue. Once this is lost, injures to them can be a lot more likely to happen. Some people begin feeling shocking pains going down their legs or into their arms. The area of your back injury will determine whether you have leg or arm pain.
Back pain due to dislodged discs comes from the nerves near being pinched. This can mean severe pain in some cases in addition to muscles weakness. The nerves are the messengers from the brain telling muscles when and how to move. If they are interrupted, it will show up in muscle weakness.
In many cases, treatment for troubling discs is done with medications to relieve the pain. Physical therapy for strengthening the muscles in the spinal area is also an option. Your doctor may advise you to get as much rest as you can and limit the activities that are strenuous. Applications of ice and heat may also be advised.
One a person has reached an intolerable level of pain, surgical intervention may be required. The procedure called discectomy may be the only way to alleviate pain. This surgery involves removing the particles and fragments of disc that are causing the nerve pain. Many patients have reported to have no pain after the healing process is over.
The first thing you present to others is your face so it is only normal that you want it to look its best. This day and age there are thousands of methods that promise to give you that youthful look but they are not consequence free. Facial acupuncture (a.k.a. cosmetic acupuncture) is a non-surgical and essentially painless procedure that reduces signs of aging.
In order to balance your body’s energy, specific acupuncture points will be uniquely chosen for you each session based on your own constitution. The goal of each session is to help the whole body look and feel younger through assessing the physical, mental, and emotional patterns that cause ailment and encourage the aging process. It is more than possible that there is a constitutional imbalance causing you to age in the ways that you are if it seems you are doing so in such a way that feels and looks unhealthy. Once balance is restored, you will begin to look more radiant and feel healthier. In addition, points will be placed superficially on your face, concentrating on any problem areas that you may have. The stimulation received will increase Qi and blood circulation in the face. This will improve muscle tone and even out skin color. Also this will stimulate the production of collagen and elastin improving overall skin durability and resilience.
Facial acupuncture yields many results. These include diminished lines and wrinkles of the face, softer and smoother skin, and a more even skin tone which is all due to an increase in collagen production. Facial puffiness will be reduced also, as well as a diminishing of bags from underneath the eyes. Pores will be tightened up so acne, rosacea, and other dermatological ailments can be eliminated. Also, facial color and muscle tone will improve, there will be a reduction in the jowls creating a firmer jaw line, and the eyes will be brightened.
The general principle of Facial Acupuncture is that beauty comes from within. Because of that, each treatment is an overall rejuvenation of your health as well as your appearance. You may experience additional benefits from the treatments such as improvements in Insomnia, Depression, Anxiety, Hot flashes, Digestive Symptoms, Chronic pain, Reduction in PMS or menopausal symptoms.
Facial acupuncture could be exactly what you are looking for, if your searching for a natural way to rejuvenate your look while still maintaining the essence of who you are. Visit New Century Spine Centers in Southern California for more info.
Today, San Diego is one of the most popular places to live in, due to its diversity, and paradise-like weather and climate. However, it’s not just people that find the city appealing to live in, because there are a number of pets in the city as well! These pets are owned by thousands of animal lovers, of which the city is also famous for, which is why there are a number of animal attractions found in and around the area, the most famous of which is perhaps the San Diego Zoo.
San Diego Zoo is an animal attraction that showcases over 4,000 different animals from over 800 different species, making it one of the most extensive collections of animals in North America. All of the animals are housed, and thrive, in an area the size of 107 acres. And the location’s climate, size, and environment make raising animals very easy, in addition to making it very welcoming to visitors and guests.
The size of the zoo is large, but it is very tourist friendly, in that it is quite easy to get around the different areas of the zoo, due to the multiple transportation options available. Buses are present that can shuttle people to over 75% of the park, and then there’s the Skyfari, which gives visitors a bird’s eye view of the whole zoo in addition to bringing them form one place to another. And then of course, there’s the multiple walkways that people who wish to move by walking can use, to easily get around the zoo.
Whether it’s by walking, taking the bus, or flying overhead on the Skyfari, visitors will be treated to a number of open air attractions. Like the open air bird exhibit that showcases the biggest free-flight aviaries on the planet! And there are also many indoor, yet smaller exhibits to enjoy, many of which have been made to have the same characteristics as the natural habitats of the animals showcased inside.
San Diego Zoo is an ideal place for animal lovers visiting the city. The animals inside, the climate, and the design of the zoo’s many displays are all spectacles to behold. It is one of the city’s most popular attractions, and must be included in all travel plans!
Do you know that there are two times you should not eat sugar. If you don’t, eating sugar at these two times of the day can damage your system and wreak havoc on your power, fitness and health. In just a moment, you will discover these two very important times. But first, here’s some significant news about common over the counter drugs. According to a July 13, 2010 issue of Neurology, drugs called anticholinergics block acetylcholine. This is a nervous system neurotransmitter, and is widely-used medical therapies. They are sold over the counter under various brand names such as Benadryl, Sominex, Tylenol PM, Dramamine, Excedrin PM, Nytol, and Unisom. Other anticholinergic drugs, such as Paxil, Detrol, Demerol and Elavil are available only by prescription.
Older adults most commonly use drugs with anticholinergic effects as sleep aids and to relieve bladder leakage problems. Researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine conducted a 6 year study with 1,652 African-Americans over the age of 70 with normal cognitive function. Results: “We found that taking one anticholinergic significantly increased an individual’s risk of developing mild cognitive impairment and taking two of these drugs doubled this risk. This is very significant in a population, African-Americans, already known to be at high risk for developing cognitive impairment,” said Noll Campbell, PharmD, first author of the study.
Dr. Campbell is a Clinical Pharmacist with Wishard Health Services. He stated that ” we have confirmed that anticholinergics, something as seemingly benign as a medication for inability to get a good night’s sleep or for motion sickness, can cause or worsen cognitive impairment, specifically long-term mild cognitive impairment which involves gradual memory loss. As a geriatrician I tell my Wishard Healthy Aging Brain Center patients not to take these drugs and I encourage all older adults to talk with their physicians about each and every one of the medications they take,” said Malaz Boustani, M.D., IU School of Medicine Associate Professor of Medicine, Regenstrief Institute Investigator and IU Center for Aging Research Center Scientist.
Now for… The Two Times NOT To Eat Sugar… When you work out, exercise triggers the release of human growth hormone (HGH). If you consume a high sugar meal or high sugar sports drink within 2 hours of your workout, you will seriously diminish the release of HGH. This is important because the HGH release helps in fat burning for 2 hours after you work out. An important note: Research has shown eating carbohydrates after a workout start the protein synthesis recovery process faster.
The second time NOT to eat sugars if you want to maximize HGH is 90 minutes before bed. Here is why: HGH is dependent on sleep and a major hormone surge occurs during the first 30-70 minutes of sleep. If this sleep is disrupted, the hormone surge can be dramatically reduced. Carbohydrates can disrupt this HGH output because carbohydrates stimulate the production of insulin… which reduces HGH. So, according to HGH magazine, if you want to maximize HGH output, do not eat carbohydrates 90 minutes before you go to sleep.
Eating fat is bad. But no wait; it’s carbohydrates that are evil. One expert says one thing, and then another doctor says something else. Back and forth this goes. Maybe that new infomercial selling the latest miracle weight loss product is the way to go? Who knows? In the meantime, you’re confused and not losing any weight. Well, get ready for some possible answers and even a few more questions.
First, the results of a new study in the June 19th, 2010 edition of The Endocrine Society reports obese women with insulin resistance lose more weight after three months on a lower-carbohydrate diet than on a traditional low-fat diet with the same number of calories. The study’s lead author, Raymond Plodkowski, MD, Chief of Endocrinology, Nutrition and Metabolism at the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine, Reno wrote, “The typical diet that physicians recommend for weight loss is a low-fat diet. However, as this study shows, not all people have the same response to diets.”
According to the researchers, for this group of women, the lower carbohydrate diet is more effective, at least in the short term. The study lasted 12 weeks and was funded by Jenny Craig. It found the insulin resistant women on the lowest-carb diet lost 3.4 pounds more than those on the low fat diet. Total calories for all groups were the same. The low fat diet included 60% of its calories from carbohydrates, 20% from fat, and 20% from protein. The low-carbohydrate diet included 45% of its calories from carbohydrates, 35% from primary unsaturated fats, and 20% from protein. Both diets included a minimum of 2 fruits and 3 vegetable servings a day. The use of prepared meals made the structured diets easier and more palatable for the dieter. “These data have potential widespread applications for clinicians when counseling people with insulin resistance to help improve weight loss as part of a calorie-restricted diet,” Plodkowski said. “They should at least initially lower their carbohydrate intake.”
Insulin resistance is a condition where the body produces insulin but does not use it properly. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas to break down glucose in the blood so it can be used for energy. Glucose is a form of sugar and is the body’s primary source of energy. After your digestive system breaks food down into glucose, glucose is then transported to different parts of your body via the bloodstream. Glucose in the blood stream is called “blood glucose” or “blood sugar.” After you eat, blood glucose levels rise and your pancreas secretes insulin to allow cells to absorb and use the glucose.
When people are insulin resistant, they do not respond properly to insulin. In other words, even though the pancreas secretes insulin, it is not effective in getting the glucose from the blood into the cells. More insulin is needed so the pancreas works harder and secretes more. Eventually, the pancreas cannot keep up with the increased demand and glucose builds up in the blood. This is the beginning of diabetes. It is common for diabetics to have high levels of both glucose and insulin circulating in the bloodstream. Insulin resistance not only sets the stage for developing Type 2 Diabetes, it increases the odds of the number one killer in America: heart disease. According to the American Diabetes Association: “People with diabetes have a higher-than-average risk of having a heart attack or stroke. These strike people with diabetes more than twice as often as people without diabetes.”
So what causes insulin resistance? There seem to be several contributing factors. The first factor may be genetic. Weight and lack of physical activity also seem to play a major role. Some scientists think specific genes make certain people more susceptible to insulin resistance. But, genes aren’t everything. Then, there are also the types of food you eat. The more junk sugars (ice cream, candy bars, etc.) you eat, the more your little pancreas has to work to keep up with all the sugar that has been dumped into the bloodstream. Just like everything else, there is only so much work your pancreas can do. If the pace is too high for too long, it will basically burn out and quit. It is important to stop this process before it gets too far. Exercise, weight loss and proper diet can reverse many cases of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes. According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, “The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and other large studies have shown that people with pre-diabetes can often prevent or delay diabetes if they lose a modest amount of weight by cutting fat and calorie intake and increasing physical activity; for example, walking 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. Losing just 5 to 7 percent of body weight prevents or delays diabetes by nearly 60 percent. In the DPP, people aged 60 or older who made lifestyle changes lowered their chances of developing diabetes by 70 percent.”
With all of this information, the most important message to take away is this: Lifestyle has a major impact on your health. Different people react to different foods and diets in different ways, and it is important to pay attention to what you eat and figure out what is best for you. But no matter what, regular exercise and staying away from junk food loaded with bad fats and sugar is a very good idea. Research may not have all the answers yet, but to our knowledge, there is no study that says sitting on the couch stuffing your face with candy bars and ice cream is good for your health.
First do no harm. That’s one of the most basic and important concepts in the practice of medicine. But in this day and age, profit seems to have taken that age-old motto’s place …Even when it comes to our children. The Associated Press reported that “Very young children simply should not take some commonly used cold and cough medicine federal health officials say in recommending that the “consult your physician” advice to parents on the labels be dropped. The preliminary recommendation, from Food and Drug Administration safety officials, would apply to decongestant use in children under 2, and antihistamines in those younger than 6, according to agency documents.
According to an Associated Press article: “Those officials, joined by the American Academy of Pediatrics, cite evidence that suggests the drugs are not only risky but also don’t work in the very young. The more than 350 pages of documents are part of a broad and ongoing FDA examination of whether the roughly 800 medicines, many popular and widely used, are safe and effective in treating children’s colds and coughs.” The FDA review came in response to a petition filed by Baltimore city officials who say many of the over-the-counter cold and cough medicines can harm toddlers and pre-schoolers.
The basic question to be considered is why a product should be so relentlessly marketed when it’s not safe or effective. It does not make much sense, especially in the absence of information, to say ‘consult a physician,’ because they do not have superhuman powers. They cannot make a product safe or effective when it is not. Here is something else to consider. The Consumer Healthcare Products Association represents the makers of over-the-counter medicines. They support not using these cold and cough medicines in children under the age of two. The association’s president, Linda Suydam, said they recommend adding a warning that the drugs not be used to sedate young children.
Wow. It’s a sad state when labels stating THAT has to be added and is not common sense to most parents. But in many parents’ defense — society has been BOMBARDED with brilliant marketing campaigns that make these drugs sound safe and effective. And even beyond that – flat out miracles. That being said… check out what Dr. William Campbell Douglass II, M.D. has to say about the issue: “I grumble about the incompetence of today’s parents a lot. It’s no secret that I think new-fangled ‘diseases’ such as ADD and ADHD are nothing more than kids being kids – and parents NOT being parents. I shudder to think that the future of this great nation is going to be largely in the hands of children who were diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder and have been dependent on drugs nearly from infancy.
Newsflash: It doesn’t work that way. “Still, that hasn’t stopped a portion of the population from drugging (yes, drugging – let’s call a spade a spade) children with allergy or cold medicines whenever it was convenient. But if the ethical concerns weren’t strong enough to make these people think twice, maybe the safety concerns will. “Something I haven’t spilled much ink over – but that is equally deserving of ridicule, in my eyes – is the absurd action of sedating children with OTC cold and allergy drugs. It’s a whole new level of irresponsibility and selfishness on the part of parents, caregivers, and anyone else who thinks children should come with an on/off switch.
“Brand names that have become the standard treatment for children – drugs such as Toddler’s Dimetapp, Triaminic Infant, and Little Colds – were placed on the market before the FDA tightened its pre-market testing standards. The main compound in Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is under inspection for the same reasons. “The sedation issue has brought about the long overdue examination of certain cough and cold medicines for children THAT WERE NEVER ADEQUATELY TESTED in children. It’s a dirty little secret, but now pediatricians and health officials are finally bringing it to light.
“This will likely come as a shock to most parents. After all, the drug companies are allowed to market the cough medicines for children. This occurs even though no studies have been done showing that they’re safe or effective!” This article is not endorsing or condemning the statement. What it does endorse is open discussion on the subject. You have to admit, it is something to think about. Especially when you take these facts into account: An FDA review of side-effect records filed with the agency between 1969 and September 2006 found 54 reports of deaths in children associated with decongestant medicines made with pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine or ephedrine. It also found 69 reports of deaths associated with antihistamine medicines containing diphenhydramine, brompheniramine or chlorpheniramine.
Most of the deaths were children younger than 2. The CDC found that in 2004 and 2005, over 1,500 children less than 2 years old had to be taken to the hospital after taking a common cough and cold medicine. Three of them died. And in Maryland alone (where the petition to review the safety and efficacy of cough and cold medicines originated), 900 children under 4 years old overdosed on these medications in 2004, and in the last 5 years such drugs have been linked to 4 deaths. Also on September 28th, the FDA gave drug companies until Oct. 31 to stop making and selling any unapproved prescription medicines labeled for use by children younger than 6 that contain the painkiller and cough suppressant hydrocodone.
Visit New Century Spine Centers in San Diego or visit their website at www.BackCareTreatment.com to get more information. Manufacturers of any other unapproved hydrocodone medicines, beyond those intended for young children, must stop making them by Dec. 31 and cease shipping them by March 31, 2008, the FDA said. It said the order applies to most of the hydrocodone formulations sold as cough medicines. And according to Dr. Douglass, “Manufacturers claim that the drugs are safe when they’re used on the proper age group (6 years old and up) and with the proper dosage.” But do they even know what constitutes proper dosage? According to Dr. Charles Gangley, the Director of the FDA’s Office of Nonprescription Drug Products, most dosages listed on these labels are no more than EDUCATED GUESSES. He said, “We have no data on these agents of what’s a safe and effective dose in children.” My advice: We’re talking about children here, infants and toddlers. So first things first: Let’s worry about SAFETY first and get to effective from there.
Chiropractors in San Diego reveal back pain relief secrets that more should know about. Everyone wants to know a good secret. This is especially true when it comes to a back pain relief secret. But the question is can you keep a secret or not? I hope not, because the secret that chiropractors are about to reveal should be shouted from the rooftops. Here is why. Have you ever heard of the ultimate fighting championship?” With its sudden rise in popularity years ago, you probably have. And I bet many still think it’s some ultraviolent bar-room brawl with sadistic, blood-thirsty fans. But that is far from the truth.
Well, that opinion may have been justified many years ago when the legendary Gracie family first started The Ultimate Fighting Championship in the United States. At that time, the Gracie family believed their brand of martial arts dubbed, “Gracie Jiu-jitsu” to be unbeatable. They were well known in Brazil for The Gracie Challenge. As the legend has it, one of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s originators, Hellio Gracie, often ran newspaper ads in Rio De Janeiro requesting anyone who wanted broken arms, legs and ribs to simply show up at his marital arts academy!
Shortly after coming to the United States, one of Hellio’s many sons’, Rorion, sent shock waves through the mixed martial arts world by announcing he would fight any man to the death for $100,000 in an early 90′s magazine interview. Rorion was also the mastermind behind the original Ultimate Fighter Championship that pitted fighters from many different fighter styles against each other with basically no rules in a fenced-in “cage” called “the octagon.” The Graicies wanted to prove to the world their fighter style was the best. And after Rorion’s skinny little brother, Royce, quickly dismantled all his opponents – some out-weighing him by over 100 pounds – they had proven their point.
It didn’t take many of those “no rules” fighter tournaments before local governments stepped in and outlawed the event in most states. Since that time, however, that “shock event” has turned into a legitimate sport with sanctioning bodies and rules to protect the fighters. It has also attracted some of the best athletes in the world such as former professional football players, Olympic Gold Medalists in Wrestling and Judo, Professional boxers and many others. Because the fighters must be accomplished at so many different fighter arts and skills (Brazilian Jiujitsu, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Thai Boxing just to name a few), many think ultimate fighters are the ultimate athletes in the world.
Why am I telling you all this and what does it have to do with relieving back and neck pain? As you can imagine, Ultimate Fighting also puts ultimate stress and strain on your spine. These athletes are constantly picking up opponents, punching, kicking and twisting themselves into a pretzel. And because of that, back pain is very common. So how do these fighters keep themselves training and fighting pain-free? Read more to discover that a big part of it is chiropractic care by chiropractors.
Here’s how. During the final show in the second season of the hit Spike TV series “Ultimate Fighter,” the heavyweight winner, Rashad Evans, took the time to thank Chiropractic Care. This was for relieving his back pain and allowing him to fight that night! And the surprising thing is… THIS WAS NOT A PAID ENDORSMENT!!!
Even more amazing, Former Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler, Randy Cotour is the former world heavyweight champion. What’s so amazing about that? He was 43 years old! Whether you agree with this sport or not, can you imagine being in good enough physical condition to be able to step into a cage and fight another person… half your age? And not only that… be the best in the world? I have heard and read several interviews with Randy. What does he credit for his mind-boggling success and what seems to be his fountain of youth? He always mentions three things that are Diet, Hard training and Chiropractic care
Just about every ultimate fighter I looked into was under routine Chiropractic care. So what? You don’t know who any of the “ultimate fighters” are. I thought you might say that, so I’ve compiled a little list of athletes and celebrities you will recognize. All have the money and resources to choose any treatment their little heart’s desire. Yet, they all have chosen to be under Chiropractic care. They are Wayne Gretzky, Evander Holyfield, Rocky Marciano, Joe Montana, Sylvester Stallone, Robin Williams, Whitney Houston, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Alec Baldwin, Richard Gere, Anthony Robbins, and more.
And this is a very small sample of the entire list I have put together. It’s really amazing. And here’s something to think about: I wonder how many athletes and celebrities that get paid to endorse a drug or similar product were actually helped by Chiropractic or another alternative without the deep pocket to pay for testimonials? Who knows? I guess that’s a secret…Final thought for this month: I’m not saying you are going to be able to step into the octagon and fight a 20-year-old kid if you are under Chiropractic care. But, if routine Chiropractic care is how the best athletes in the world relieve their back pain and function at elite levels… don’t you think it could help your back pain and the quality of your life?
