A New Way Of Exploring The Outdoors: Mountain Biking

without comments

It seems like now more than ever before in The United States, new sports are popping up all of the time. From the explosion of skateboarding, both street and ramp style, to the transformation of surfing from something only weirdos did to a normal pastime, sports are perpetually growing, changing, and challenging themselves to get more difficult. Whether it’s big-wave surfing or kiteboarding, there’s always someone upping the ante on what it means to be a true athlete.

One of the more popular new sports initially started growing around ski areas where no one knew what to do with the mountain during the time there wasn’t snow. Like many other famous sports, it developed from just a good idea to a national craze. The sport in question? Mountain biking.

Rather than regular bike riding, which involves pavement and less attention paid to the surroundings, mountain biking is something where going off-road is par for the course. The terrain encountered while mountain biking is uneven, difficult, and tough sometimes to even walk on.

But more than that, there are different types of mountain biking, some of which spend time on more manicured surfaces, some who go all out and head to the middle of nowhere, and others where the riding is more built on creating one’s own type of style and implementing it, but in the dirt instead of out on the street.

With so much innovation to the sport, it’s sometimes difficult to tell which are different styles, and which are just new takes on old concepts that aren’t actually a separate riding school. That’s not as important as figuring out what type of riding one wants to be participating in, but can also be helpful for making a choice–and even figuring out a bike to use–at some point down the road.

The most popular type of mountain biking to watch, and a style that’s known for packing crowds at The X-Games, is dirt jumping. In this type of mountain biking, riders propel themselves off of large dirt jumps with the intention of doing any number of arial tricks, including flips and handlebar stands, before safely landing on the ground.

Since not everyone has access to mountain trails or even large urban parks, a popular style for those living in cities, especially teenagers, is known as urban or street riding. The only gear needed here is a bicycle, usually one with a smaller frame and smaller wheels that is lighter to carry. Riders go out alone or in groups, and like skateboarders who used to figure out how to ride railings and sidewalks, do very much the same thing with their bicycles. Balance and creativity is a huge component to this style of riding.

For most people with access to the trails, the obvious starting off point for riding is to begin with cross-country mountain biking. Just as simple as the name sounds, cross-country is all about the bicycle and the terrain, with no added obstacles or epic jumps. Cross-country riders have larger, more durable bicycles, and tackle everything from bumpy uphill trails to muddy, tricky downhill slopes. It’s a great way to learn about balance and endurance.

There are also newer, more intense takes on previously existing forms of mountain biking seen as more professional and challenging. One, known as short cross or speed cross, pits riders against a very short, very challenging trail. Usually, there are a great deal more obstacles, and the trail is a lot thinner. This is not a good starting point, and is recommended for experts only.

Whether it’s a relaxing day out on a simple and easy to ride trail, or a gutsy afternoon of taking on different jumps and courses, mountain biking is a hugely valuable and helpful sport in getting people back outside, enjoying nature. Even in urban areas, the change between exercising indoors and finally enjoying fresh air again is apparent, and very helpful for teenagers, children, and adults alike.

Damian Papworth adores the excitement of mountain biking, but always makes sure he fills his bike water bottles for his trips. A cycling water bottle is so important to maintaining hydration in this taxing sport.

What Is The London Underground Mosquito?

without comments

Who would have guessed that the London Underground is home to a unique species of mosquito? The species is known as the London Underground mosquito and is thought to have evolved from Culex pipiens. The London Underground species has been dubbed Culex pipiens molestus, because it is a tireless biter.

It is not new, but it is comparatively new in biological terms. Molestus is known to have bitten Londoners during the Second World War whilst they were taking refuge during the air raids. However, there are other references to a mosquito with the same name, molestus, 170 years before the war, when there was no underground railway system in London or anywhere else in the world.

This mosquito was first discovered in the London Underground, which is why it got its name, but it can be discovered in metro and underground railway systems all around the world. No one really knows a lot concerning this insect species yet.

Some people suggest that it is a variant of a local Culex pipiens that has adapted to living in warmer, subterranean tunnels, whilst others say that is a southern (and therefore warmer) variant of C. pipiens that is able to live in the colder north because it has colonized the warm train tunnels of the underground systems.

Yet others, notably Kate Byrne and Richard Nichols, suggest that it is a totally different species from Culex pipiens. Their proof for saying this is that there are differences between pipiens and molestus: they display very different behavioural patterns and do not mate readily with each other.

C. pipiens molestus will bite rats, mice and humans and dies in cold temperatures but remains active all year round, whereas C. pipiens can tolerate cold weather, only bites birds and hibernates if the weather gets very cold.

On the rare occasions when the two varieties cross breed, the eggs are infertile, which suggests that they are distantly related if at all. Recent studies indicate that molestus originated in one source but spread rapidly around the world, maybe in freight.

Second-hand tyres have been held responsible for spreading molestus around the world. There is a colossal international trade in second hand tyres and it is infamously difficult to get all the water out of a tyre that has been left in the rain. Mosquitoes can breed in a tiny amount of water, so this is a possibility.

There is a bizarre and not completely explained twist to the story of the molestus, the American version of molestus pipiens still bites birds which leads some people to say that molestus is a separate species, but that it has formed a hybrid in America with pipiens.

This is fairly frightening, but fairly possible, because the American pipiens can transmit human encephalitis caused by the West Nile virus, an outbreak of which hit New York in 1999.

There is a lot more to find out about the London Underground mosquito, since the story is only just starting to unfold. The real story will probably come out of America where this new mosquito has proved to be the most perilous.

Advice For Keeping Mosquitoes Out Of Your Backyard

without comments

Anyone with a nice garden, patio or deck will surely take pleasure in sitting outside on a warm summer’s day or evening. But if there is one thing that can ruin it for you, it is mosquitoes.

Occasionally, it only takes one of two determined mosquitoes to make your blood boil. Mosquitoes are a nuisance for sure, but they can also become a health hazard, spreading dengue fever and malaria and a number of other truly horrible diseases. So how do you go about keeping mosquitoes out of your garden?

Perhaps you cannot realistically hope to keep mosquitoes out of your backyard completely, but there are some measures you can take to deter them and hold their numbers down. Preventing them breeding in your garden is the first step to take. Mosquitoes do not have a long flying range, many of the mosquitoes that trouble you in your backyard will have been born in your garden.

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, so make certain that there is none in your garden. They will lay eggs in water butts, dogs’ bowls, water that has collected in old tyres, bottles and tins and your waste cans, so make certain that no water can gather anywhere. Blocked gutters are another breeding site. If you have a water feature, put fish in it to feed on the larvae.

Mosquitoes hate the smell of lemon, so you could grow citronella plants, lemon thyme, lemon grass and even a lemon tree, if the climate is right. Otherwise you could burn citronella scented candles or oil nearby They not only keep the mosquitoes away, but the smell is very fresh and envigourating.

If they are still pestering you, you might have to rely on mosquito repellent. You could imbue your clothing with permethrin, like the army does for jungle warfare or just rub a deet-based product on your skin. There are also plenty of natural mosquito repellents as well, such as lemon oil, citronella and eucalyptus oil.

Garlic is said to deter mosquitoes, so you could try growing garlic nearby. It is also believed to deter ticks and has proven to discourage greenfly (aphids) from roses. What could be better, especially if you are partial to garlic as well?

You could put up one or two of those lamps that lure insects to them and them kill them with a high voltage current. These electric insect killers are especially good for killing mosquitoes and household flies, which can also become a nuisance if you are sitting outside.

They are reasonably priced and will last for years. They give off a pleasing glow and some claim to be able to clear areas of a quarter, a half and even a full acre of land of all flying insects by the use of the ultraviolet light and pheromones.

By using some or all of the above ways of keeping mosquitoes out of your garden, you should be able to enjoy your drink, a chat or a doze in complete peace and freedom from flies and mosquitoes.

Air Conditioning In Cars

without comments

Sky high fuel prices, the recession and the menace of unemployment means that most drivers are searching for ways to reduce the amount of fuel they use in their cars. There are various things you can do to reduce your fuel bills that will not include any costly alterations to your car. In fact, it will not involve any modifications at all.

One of the first things to realize is that fuel additives do not work. None of them have been proven to work. On the other hand a well tuned engine will run at its maximum fuel efficiency. This can most easily be incorporated into your car’s annual service.

Another technique to save fuel is not to accelerate quickly or brake suddenly. Try to drive smoothly and stay under 60 miles per hour. Fifty-six miles per hour is the most economical driving speed for many modern cars.

However, the easiest way of saving money on driving your car, is to turn off the air conditioning system completely. You have probably already noticed that your car is less responsive when you have the air conditioning running. This is because your car’s engine is powering the wheels of your car and the air conditioning system. In other words, your car’s engine is driving two motors at the same time, dividing its resources.

Therefore, you should avoid using your car’s air conditioning system unless you really have to have it. Opening the roof light is a good alternative, which will not create too much draft. The extra sun light is invigorating too. I personally like to have my window down while I am driving, although I am aware that it can be very drafty in the back of the car if you have passengers there.

If you do not have rear passengers and you do not want too much draft anyway, you can open a rear window in order to lower the temperature in your car.

A vehicle’s air conditioning system is a boon if you can afford to run it, but it is also an superfluous luxury if you need to save some money on fuel. Some statistics show that a car’s air conditioning can cost anything between 5% and 10% of your fuel costs, if your are driving slowly in the inner city. Less if you are driving fast on the highway.

Turning off the air conditioning is the simplest and easiest way to save on your fuel bills. Many auto cooling systems still have fans and very forceful ones as well. There is no need to roast just because you have turned the car’s air conditioning off.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with split air conditioning systems. If you are interested in Home Air Conditioning Systems, please click through to our site.

You Never Know, When You Might Need a Chiropractor

without comments

I never thought that I would be the type of person who would ever need the services of a chiropractic physician. I mean, why would I ever have to see one, I was in shape, I do not have any skeletal problems, I drink lots of milk, and while I am athletic, I do not do anything that puts a great deal of strain on my spine. The other day I found out just how wrong I really was.

The day started of just fine. A friend and I decided that since the weather was good, we should go trail riding. Not being stupid, I opted to ride my big, old, dependable gelding, Acorn, instead of my younger and much greener mare. Acorn stood behind me, bored, while I struggled with the gate latch. I did hear the hoof beats of my filly as she galloped towards us, but I did not think too much about it. I felt safe.

I’m still not sure what happened, I was undoing the gate latch and Bongo was standing quietly behind me. The next second Keeley went flying past us, charging right pas Bongo’s tail. Bongo reared up, jerking at the lead rope as he tried to follow my filly as she raced back towards the back end of the pasture. The force of Bongo pulling on the lead rope not only spun me around, put it also caused me to trip and crash down one knee, hard. I was able to hold on to him, but just barely. Cursing, I picked myself up, got him under control, and scrapped the mud off my britches. I was sore, but nothing felt broken, just bruised, so I was not to worried, and went on my trail ride.

Two days after the tumble in the mud I was ready to admit that something was wrong. I have never been in so much pain. There was no escaping it. Everything I did from sleeping to feeding the horses hurt like blazes. Admitting defeat, I went to my healthcare provider who said I needed the help of a chiropractic physician. My doctor felt that the best way to ease my pain was with an adjustment.

I have heard horror stories about people who have gone to a doctor of chiropractic and actually come away in worse shape, the chiropractor actually made the damage worse. Since I did not want that to be my story, I got online and started surfing the websites of different Toronto chiropractors, continuing to look until I found one that had an x-ray machine. That was exactly what I was looking for. I figured that if they could take current x-rays of my spine, they would far less likely to screw anything up.The great thing about the whole deal was that I was able to use the chiropractic physician’s website to book my appointment and send the medical records that they needed.

The chiropractic physician I chose spent a long time with me. We discussed how when Bingo yanked at me and I fell my spine had become misaligned. The reason for my sever pain was my muscles were trying to adapt to ways that the misalignment had changed my posture. I was very impressed with how coherently he spoke as well as the fact that he took the time to really answer my questions and address my concerns.

One of the interesting things I learned was that chiropractic physicians and chiropractic work is no longer covered by Ontario’s health care plan. Luckily, I do have private health insurance which did cover the expense or else I would have had to pay out of my own pocket. I have never been so grateful to have the insurance.

Scuba Diving Vacations

without comments

When it comes to scuba diving, many swimmers are not told the truth. They believe that you have to be a competent diver and a resilient swimmer to enjoy underwater swimming.

However, this is simply not true, although before you go scuba diving in the ocean, it is advisable that you have some fundamental knowledge of diving and decent swimming ability. However, you do not have to be an experienced diver. After all, everyone has to go scuba diving for the first time.

Scuba diving is a fairly self-explanatory pursuit really. Scuba divers can be seen in many movies and in many theme parks. While the general idea of scuba diving is the same everywhere in the world, what you will see underwater is not. There are a number of marine creatures and plants that can only be seen in certain countries. This is one of the reasons why you should book a scuba diving voyage carefully.

In Thailand for instance, scuba divers are often able to swim with porpoise and sea turtles. This alone is worth the cost of scuba diving for many people. Aside from swimming with sea animals, you can also spend your scuba diving holiday examining life and the environment underwater.

Just a few of the many sea creatures that you can easily see in Thailand are large lobsters, electric eels, sting rays and a large number of different kinds of fish. The fish found in Thai waters are very diverse because of the fantastic environment they have there, which includes natural reefs, sandbanks and wrecks..

Maritime creatures are unquestionably the most exciting part of scuba diving, but there are also other submarine activities in which to participate. For instance, many scuba divers enjoy diving along coral reefs. Coral reefs are not only home to a large amount of marine animals, but they are also great to explore. You will find it exciting swimming around the many different shaped reefs.

Having said this, unless you are an experienced underwater diver, you should go scuba diving with a trained professional. These professionals are most commonly found by means of scuba diving tour groups. Scuba diving tour groups can be found all along the coast of Thailand. Scuba diving is a prevalent pastime among foreigners in Thailand, so you would be astute to book your scuba diving trips well ahead of time.

As well as booking a scuba dive with a trained diver, you can also take scuba diving lessons at most coastal resorts in Thailand. Many of these places also offer guided tours. Scuba diving lessons are offered as group lessons or private lessons. Private lessons may be a little more expensive, but many first time scuba divers find them worthwhile, in more ways than one.

To find accompanied tours designed for scuba divers, you can ask in local sea front bars, at your hotel reception or at the nearest tourist information bureau. Whether you have already selected your destination or not, you will easily be able to find local underwater tours or lesson, especially in the more popular Thai cities like Pattaya and Phuket. The things that you will see underwater will make your holiday even more unforgettable and make you wish you had started years previously.

Great Alternatives To Hot Weekends In The Big Apple

without comments

If you live in New York, then you know being here on a summer weekend is no fun. Sure, a picnic in the park is nice, but don’t even think about going down to SoHo. You will be eaten alive in a sea of Europeans. If you want to get out of the city, here are some fun options.

Just drive north. It doesn’t matter where, the further you drive north, the more beautiful it gets. Find a little hotel on a placid lake in Connecticut, or stay at the Castle on the Hudson for a luxurious weekend vacation.

If you’ve never been to Fire Island, put it on your summer checklist. Every town in Fire Island has its own unique character, but they all have something in common: no cars. If it weren’t for the cell phones that people are on, you would think you are in the 1950s in Fire Island.

The Hamptons is another very popular destination for many New Yorkers.

Some of the best areas to go out east include East Hampton, Amagansett and Sag Harbor. All are about a one hour to one and a half hour drive from Manhattan without traffic.

If you are looking to go to Long Island, but the Hamptons aren’t your scene, look into the North Fork of Long Island. Towns like Greenpoint and Orient point are wonderful weekend destinations. The wine out there is excellent, as are the baked goods at Briermeir farm.

Head up to the Cape. If you have any friends who have a summer house in Cape Cod, take advantage of it! Cape Cod is a wonderful place to spend your summer days. In fact, my friends and I have made a tradition of going up to Cape Cod every July 4th.

Hopefully this article helped turn a light bulb on in your head for ideas for some fun ideas for the summer.
